Chemical Works 1936

The river is top right, the road diagonally through centre and the railway on left. Castle Water is bottom left and Carters yard top left is where the shingle extracted from Castle Water was sorted and loaded on lorries.

Comments

The area where we used to go ice skating (when cold enough) was just to the north of the road and the buildings. The flooded field was very shallow, but on reflection I've no doubt it was polluted - but not something you think about as a child!! I know it used to smell something awful.
